Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition that some people get when they lose their vision. It causes them to see hallucinations. Your doctor can diagnose CBS by ruling out other causes of hallucinations, such as mental illness. You will be aware that what you are seeing is not real. Talking to your ophthalmologist will help you feel reassured and less isolated.
There is no treatment for CBS, but talking with friends, getting enough rest and exercise, and avoiding environmental triggers can make the condition more manageable. Most people with CBS don’t see as many hallucinations after one or two years.
